We often hear that moving is good for your health, but not everyone knows why. The good news is that physical activity does not always mean intense exercise or having to go to the gym. The simple movements you do every day also count as physical activity and can benefit both body and mind.

What Is Physical Activity?

Physical activity is any body movement that makes you use energy. That means it covers far more than just structured exercise. Walking, climbing stairs, cleaning the house, gardening, or playing with your children all count. Because of that, anyone can actually start being more active without needing special equipment or a big budget.

Benefits for Body and Mind

Moving regularly is generally associated with a body that feels fitter and a mind that feels fresher. Although everyone is different, many people notice the following when they are more active:

  • The body feels more energetic for getting through daily activities
  • Muscles and joints tend to feel stronger and more flexible
  • Sleep quality can improve for some people
  • Mood often becomes better after moving

Keep in mind that these benefits are general. How much of an effect they have can vary depending on each person's condition, age, and habits.

Start with Something Simple

If you are not used to being active yet, there is no need to push yourself to do a lot right away. Start gradually, for example by adding a little movement to your existing routine, then increase it slowly according to your condition and ability. Listen to your body: if pain, dizziness, or other symptoms appear, stop for a while and rest. Choose the kinds of movement you enjoy so they are easier to keep up consistently.
